Yesterday, I participated in “The Runner’s Rite of Spring”. This was my fourth year in a row running in the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run… it is my absolute favorite race! I always try to go to the expo on Friday, but my busy schedule wouldn’t allow it this year. My boyfriend and I went to the expo on Saturday morning instead… and it was crazy crowded. I would definitely recommend going to the expo on Friday, if you can!
The expo is held at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC. We drove to the expo and got really lucky with a parking spot right across the street from the building museum! We used the Parkmobile app and only paid $4.45 for 2 hours.
While at the expo, we picked up our bibs and shirts, visited some vendors, and listened to Kathrine Switzer speak. Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to complete the Boston Marathon with an official bib number in 1967. She is truly inspiring!
I’ve used the metro to get this race for the past 3 years. However, due to the “SafeTrack” program, the metro does not open until 7AM. We drove into the city on race morning and parked at the Ronald Reagan building. I used Parking Panda to reserve a parking spot ahead of time for $15.00. Getting into the Reagan building was a nightmare. The security guards had to check every car before entering the parking garage. I started stressing out as it got closer and closer to the start of the race. We finally parked around 7:15AM, took the elevator upstairs, and found clean bathroom with no line (SCORE!!!).
The Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run starts and finishes at the Washington Monument. We made it to the start line as my corral was getting ready to go, so we just jumped into the next corral.
I LOVE this course. It’s relatively flat (except for the hill at the very end) and absolutely beautiful.
My favorite part of the race is miles 6-9 on Hains Point. Every year, spectators set up beer and Oreos at the picnic tables between miles 7 and 8 and every year I stop and have a beer with them 🙂
After we crossed the finish line, we headed to the Medal Distribution area, which is located on the Washington Monument Grounds. I always pre-order a medal and highly recommend it 🙂 I just love all of my Cherry Blossom medals!!!
